Germany and UAE Enhance Strategic Partnership by Broadening Relations

Date:

The visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, a relationship fostered through decades of collaboration in political, economic, energy, and cultural spheres. Initiated in 1972, the diplomatic relations have seen a significant evolution, particularly in trade and investment. Last year, bilateral trade surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), establishing the UAE as Germany’s primary trading partner within the Gulf region.

Germany’s presence in the UAE is marked by around 2,000 companies, including prominent names like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. This business collaboration extends into the energy sector, where both countries are engaging in initiatives related to renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security. A notable development in 2022 was the signing of an agreement aimed at bolstering energy security and industrial cooperation, which includes UAE’s supply of liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures focused on clean energy and climate efforts.

Beyond economic and energy ties, the UAE and Germany have established a strong foundation of cooperation in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. This multifaceted partnership was formally recognized in 2004 through a strategic partnership agreement that encompasses areas such as regional security, economic collaboration, and research. The enduring nature of this relationship is evident even amid global political and economic challenges.

The steadfast connection between the UAE and Germany continues to thrive, with both countries committed to expanding their collaboration across various strategic sectors. This enduring partnership not only highlights their shared interests but also their mutual commitment to addressing pressing global issues together.
