Demi Vollering has claimed her second consecutive Tour de France Femmes title following a strategic and powerful performance on the final climbs near Nice, finishing with a lead of 1 minute and 18 seconds over her closest competitor, Kasia Niewiadoma. The Dutch cyclist executed a decisive move on the Col d’Èze, breaking away from Niewiadoma with just 600 meters remaining on the last ascent. Despite persistent efforts, Niewiadoma, the 2024 champion, was unable to respond to Vollering’s attack.
The competition between Vollering and Niewiadoma was intensified by a disagreement regarding tactics in the prior stage. Niewiadoma alleged that Célia Gery, a member of Vollering’s team, had impeded her during a crucial segment of Saturday’s race. This accusation led to ongoing discussions and criticism as the two riders prepared for the final stage. Nevertheless, Niewiadoma acknowledged Vollering’s strength and expressed her desire for a fair competition, commending the Dutch rider’s formidable performance.
Vollering emphasized that her triumph was a testament to her team’s deserving victory based on their sporting merits. Niewiadoma’s consistent performances secured her the second place overall, maintaining her impressive streak of podium finishes in recent editions of the Tour de France Femmes.
The final stage wasn’t without its challenges for other competitors, as Marlen Reusser suffered a crash while descending the Col d’Èze. The Swiss rider, who had started the day in third place overall, unfortunately slipped to 14th in the general classification following the incident.
