Hungary Airlines Expands Cargo Services and Revamps Operations

Date:

Hungary Airlines is adapting its business operations as Europe’s air cargo landscape shifts due to a new €3 customs duty on small shipments that took effect on July 1. This regulatory change has significantly impacted e-commerce cargo volumes across the continent, with a noticeable spike in shipments in June as businesses hurried to move goods before the duty’s implementation. Following this, July witnessed a reduction in cargo volumes and extended processing times. The industry is now seeing a gradual stabilization, though it remains on alert for a further €2 processing fee anticipated in November.

In the midst of these challenges, Hungary Airlines has faced delays in the scheduled maintenance of its main freighter, the Airbus A330-243F with the registration HA-LHU. Originally planned maintenance was prolonged due to global supply-chain issues, extending the aircraft’s C-check to mid-September. The airline expects the freighter to resume full operations by the end of the month. To navigate the evolving market conditions, Hungary Airlines is planning to alter its route network, tweak cargo-handling processes, and temporarily cut back on flight frequencies to optimize aircraft load factors.

Compounding the airline’s logistical adjustments, its second aircraft, an Airbus A330-243P2F registered HA-ZTO, is exiting the fleet as its owner has opted to sell. Despite this, Hungary Airlines maintains its commitment to fleet expansion and is actively exploring leasing and growth opportunities to enhance its operational capacity.

In a strategic move to diversify its services, the airline is venturing into specialized cargo sectors. Starting from the third quarter, Hungary Airlines aims to offer live-animal transportation and temperature-controlled cargo services. By implementing real-time monitoring solutions, the airline seeks to provide more specialized offerings and tap into higher-margin markets.
