Android Backups Now Impact Google Account Storage Limits

Date:

Google is set to revise its policy on how Android device backups are stored by counting them towards the 15GB of free cloud storage allocated to every Google Account. This shift means that Android backups, which include SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app data, will now consume part of the shared storage space on Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

The change is anticipated to come into effect in the coming weeks. On average, an Android backup is expected to use about 40MB of storage. For users nearing or exceeding their storage limits, this could necessitate freeing up space or opting for a Google One subscription to ensure continued access to automatic device backups. If an account’s storage runs out, these backups will be paused until additional space is available.

In tandem with the storage policy update, Google is also reportedly working on more detailed backup controls. These new tools would allow users to select which apps and types of data they want to back up, providing greater flexibility and potentially reducing the overall size of backups. This move aims to give users more control over how their cloud storage is utilized.

The upcoming changes mark a significant shift in how Google manages cloud storage for Android devices. By integrating backups into the storage limit, Google underscores the importance of managing digital data actively. Users are encouraged to monitor their storage usage and consider their options for maintaining access to essential backup features.
