Hungary Fails to Unlock Frozen EU Funds, Reports European Commission

Date:

The European Commission has dismissed assertions that Hungary has already obtained billions of euros in European Union funds that were previously frozen. Contrary to these claims, the Commission clarified that Hungary has not yet filed an official payment request under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The deadline for submitting the necessary documentation is September 30, 2026.

Hungary’s compliance with the required reforms and achievement of “super milestones” will only be evaluated once the payment request is submitted. As of now, the review process is incomplete, and there is no confirmation that Hungary has fulfilled all conditions. According to the RRF process, Hungary must present evidence of the implementation of the required reforms and investments before the European Commission can assess and potentially approve the release of funds.

The Commission further stated that any approved payments would be issued by December 31, 2026. However, should there be any discrepancies or missing documentation, the process could face delays. Additional documentation or corrections may be requested if the officials find issues during their evaluation of Hungary’s submission.

This situation arises amid claims by the Hungarian government, led by TISZA, that the country had effectively secured the frozen EU funding. However, the European Commission’s response emphasizes that these funds have not been transferred, and the final assessment is still underway.
