Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia have expressed support for Greece’s decision to deploy Patriot air defense systems to the Kingdom, a move that underscores the growing defense cooperation between the two nations. This deployment aims to protect critical infrastructure, including vital energy facilities along the Red Sea coast, amidst rising regional tensions.
Ioannis Barmpounis and Dimitra Chasapi, Greek residents in Saudi Arabia, conveyed a sense of pride in their homeland’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s security. They emphasized the longstanding ties between the two countries, highlighting mutual trust and shared cultural values such as hospitality and family respect.
During a visit on October 15, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias reinforced Greece’s commitment by meeting with the Greek Patriot air defense contingent stationed in Yanbu. His discussions with Saudi leaders focused on defense cooperation and addressing regional security concerns, particularly the threats posed by missiles and drones to strategic infrastructure.
For Greece, this deployment provides not only a strategic operational experience in modern air defense systems but also strengthens its security relationship with Saudi Arabia. The partnership has become increasingly crucial as both countries face similar regional security challenges.
Despite the tensions in the region, Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia reported feeling safe and expressed hopes for the collaboration to extend beyond military support. They envision future cooperation that includes economic, professional, and cultural exchanges, contributing to regional stability, stronger diplomatic ties, and lasting peace.
