Trump: “Little Dam” in Ethiopia is a Big Problem for Egypt

Date:

Donald Trump says the “little dam” in Ethiopia is actually a big problem for Egypt. The former President has offered to mediate the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, aiming to resolve the water conflict that has strained relations in East Africa.
Trump’s proposal focuses on a balanced solution. He suggests that Ethiopia should be allowed to generate electricity, acknowledging the dam’s purpose. However, he insists that Egypt must receive “predictable water releases” to prevent shortages, a condition that requires strict monitoring.
The dam, which Trump ironically called “little,” is the largest in Africa. Its construction has raised fears in Egypt of a permanent reduction in the Nile’s flow. Sudan is also concerned about the environmental impact. The lack of a treaty has left the region in a state of uncertainty.
Trump’s previous attempts to broker a deal ended in failure, but he remains optimistic. He has frequently claimed credit for managing the dispute, listing it among his foreign policy successes. His return to the issue signals a desire to achieve a tangible victory.
By offering to resume mediation, Trump is hoping to leverage U.S. power to force a compromise. His focus on “fair and transparent negotiations” suggests he wants to create a level playing field. The success of this effort will depend on whether the parties trust his intentions.
