Members of the FIDESZ–KDNP group in the European Parliament are pressing the European Commission for answers regarding recent constitutional and political changes in Hungary. They argue these changes could be eroding democratic institutions and claim the Commission has remained silent on the matter.
At a joint session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to state its position on several critical issues. These include constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, modifications to parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions.
The Hungarian lawmakers pointed out that the Commission had previously flagged rule-of-law concerns in Hungary, which led to the withholding of EU funds. However, they expressed concern that the Commission has not yet commented on the latest developments. The delegation questioned whether these constitutional changes align with European democratic standards.
The FIDESZ–KDNP representatives emphasized that democratic principles must be applied uniformly across all EU member states, suggesting that Hungary is being unfairly scrutinized. Despite their queries, Commission officials did not provide specific responses during the meeting, leaving the Hungarian delegation’s questions unanswered.
