Orbán Urges EU Reform, Justifies Veto Approach Against Brussels Policies

Date:

Hungarian political figure Viktor Orbán has staunchly defended his government’s strategic use of veto power within the European Union, framing it as a necessary countermeasure to what he describes as undue political pressure from Brussels. During his address at an international press conference in Belgium, Orbán underscored his commitment to bolstering conservative and sovereigntist movements across Europe.

Orbán emphasized the rising influence of patriotic and anti-immigration parties, attributing this trend to widespread dissatisfaction with the European Union’s approach to critical issues such as security, migration, economic competitiveness, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite recent electoral challenges, he argued that these parties continue to gain momentum as they capitalize on public discontent with the EU’s policies.

Addressing disputes over EU funding, Orbán recounted how his previous administration perceived the withholding of funds as a form of political coercion. In response, Hungary resorted to leveraging its veto power to potentially block significant EU decisions, including the approval of the bloc’s forthcoming seven-year budget. Orbán suggested that Hungary should persist in utilizing its veto authority to secure the financial resources it deems rightfully owed.

Furthermore, Orbán criticized EU mechanisms that condition funding on political and legal compliance, contending that these measures open avenues for future political influence over member states. He expressed concerns that such conditions could be exploited to exert undue pressure on countries within the union.

Looking to the future, Orbán predicted that conservative and patriotic parties would increasingly shape Europe’s political landscape. He foresees a scenario where center-right parties will be compelled to choose between aligning with leftist forces or fostering greater cohesion among right-leaning factions.
