Greece Begins UN Security Council Presidency Amid Key Global Issues

Date:

Greece has taken on the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council as of October 1, marking its second and final term during its 2025–26 tenure as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will oversee the 15-member council throughout the month.

During its presidency, Greece will lead discussions on several pressing global issues. The Security Council is set to address the ongoing war in Ukraine, the escalating situation in Gaza, tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict in Sudan, and the security crisis in Haiti. These discussions are crucial as they pertain to some of the most significant international conflicts and tensions currently unfolding.

In addition to these conflicts, Greece’s presidency coincides with ongoing deliberations regarding the appointment of the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council plays a pivotal role in this process by recommending a candidate to the General Assembly. The new secretary-general is scheduled to assume office on January 1, 2027.

Particularly notable is the council’s expected involvement in Haiti, where an international security force is actively supporting efforts to manage armed violence in anticipation of upcoming elections. This involvement highlights the council’s commitment to addressing not only conflicts but also supporting governance and stability in vulnerable regions.

As Greece leads the Security Council, its role will be critical in navigating these complex international issues and contributing to the selection of leadership within the UN, underscoring the significance of its presidency during this term.
