Greece maintained their lead at the top of their Nations League group following a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The home team took control early in the match, with Fotis Ioannidis scoring the opener in the 23rd minute, assisted by a header from Giorgos Masouras.
Masouras further extended Greece’s lead in the first-half stoppage time. He capitalized on a poor backpass from the Netherlands, with Ioannidis setting up the opportunity for a close-range finish.
The Netherlands, however, made a strong comeback after halftime. Virgil van Dijk narrowed the gap in the 59th minute, heading in a goal from Joey Veerman’s corner. Despite a crucial save from Greece’s goalkeeper Konstantis Tzolakis later in the match, the Netherlands managed to equalize in the 89th minute through Tijjani Reijnders, who scored from close range.
With this result, Greece sits on seven points, two points ahead of the Netherlands. Greece is set to face Germany in their next match on Sunday.
