Venice Commission Engages with Hungarian President on Constitutional Conflict

Date:

In a significant meeting at Sándor Palace, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok engaged with a delegation from the Venice Commission to address constitutional issues that have arisen in Hungary following recent elections. This gathering marks an important step in resolving disputes related to the country’s public institutions and ensuring alignment with European constitutional standards.

The delegation was led by Venice Commission President Marta Cartabia, accompanied by Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini, and Christoph Grabenwarter, a member from Austria. These discussions are part of an ongoing effort to navigate the constitutional challenges facing Hungary, with a focus on maintaining the integrity of its public institutions.

Earlier in May, President Sulyok formally sought assistance from the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional law, requesting their expert guidance to address these challenges. The aim is to find solutions that adhere to European constitutional principles, thereby preserving Hungary’s legal framework and governance standards.

Responding to this request, the Venice Commission has agreed to prioritize the examination of Hungary’s constitutional situation. They have commenced consultations in Budapest to gather relevant information and provide informed recommendations. This collaborative approach signifies a commitment to resolving the issues swiftly and effectively.

The Office of the President expressed optimism regarding the involvement of the Venice Commission. They believe that the insights and recommendations provided by the Commission will play a crucial role in upholding Hungary’s constitutional order, ensuring it aligns with European norms and values.
