No Answers for Deportees: US Sends Migrants to South Sudan, Offers No Support

Date:

US border authorities have acknowledged they do not know the fate of eight men deported to South Sudan, a country still recovering from civil war. The men, from countries as varied as Laos and Mexico, were sent to a nation with which only one of them has any connection.
Tom Homan, the US border czar, said,There’s like a 100 different endings to this – I just don’t know in every specific case what their status is. This admission highlights the uncertainty and risk faced by deportees sent to unfamiliar and unstable countries.
After a period of detention in Djibouti due to legal challenges, the group was eventually transferred to South Sudan following Supreme Court decisions that allowed such deportations. South Sudanese authorities say the men are in custody and being screened.
The administration’s broader policy has included similar deportations to countries like El Salvador, raising international concerns about the safety and rights of migrants removed from the US.
