Germany and Greece Explore Future Submarine Construction and Defense Collaboration

Date:

Germany is exploring a potential collaboration with Greece on a future submarine construction program, with discussions centered around the modern Type 212 CD submarines. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias recently met at the Crete Firing Range to discuss this proposal and other defense cooperation initiatives.

Pistorius emphasized Greece’s role as a trusted partner, suggesting that submarine construction could occur within Greece. This initiative aligns with the Hellenic Navy’s plans to consider new submarine acquisitions post-2030, with detailed discussions expected to follow Greece’s 2027 national elections.

The discussions also highlighted Greece’s commitment to enhancing defense ties with Germany through joint military training, improved operational coordination, hosting of German forces, and acquiring compatible military equipment. Furthermore, the ministers addressed cooperative efforts involving Greek and German forces in the Kosovo Force (KFOR) and pilot training in Kalamata, alongside Greece’s interest in acquiring IRIS-T SLS air defense missiles.

These talks reflect both countries’ intention to expand their defense cooperation and explore opportunities for joint military production and training, reinforcing their strategic partnership in the region.
