Iran-US Tensions Drive Oil Prices Up Over 7%

Date:

Oil prices have spiked dramatically, climbing over 7%, due to escalating military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, which have sparked fears of potential disruptions in global energy supplies. Brent crude saw an increase of nearly 8%, reaching approximately $90.75 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose almost 7%, hitting around $84.76 per barrel. This significant rise in prices followed a series of military confrontations that have raised concerns about a protracted regional conflict.

The tensions escalated as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles targeting U.S. military facilities in Jordan, in retaliation for recent American military actions. Concurrently, U.S. and Saudi forces executed coordinated attacks on Iran-backed militant positions in Iraq, asserting that their operations aimed at logistics and weapons sites associated with repeated drone assaults on military and energy infrastructure.

These developments have also heightened worries about maritime security. The IRGC reported that its naval forces intercepted and attacked three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging they had disregarded navigation warnings. Additionally, Yemen’s Houthi rebels stated they targeted a Saudi-linked oil tanker in the Red Sea, further exacerbating risks for commercial shipping in the region.

The renewed hostilities have intensified fears over possible supply disruptions, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which are two of the most crucial energy transit routes worldwide. Market analysts have cautioned that ongoing attacks on shipping lanes and energy infrastructure could sustain high oil prices and contribute to increased volatility in global markets.
