Heatwave Wrecks €2 Billion in European Crops, Sparks Food Price Fears

Date:

A record-breaking heatwave in June has led to significant agricultural setbacks in Europe, with crop losses estimated at €2 billion and a reduction in grain production by approximately 9 million tonnes. This downturn has sparked concerns over rising food prices and the security of regional food supplies.

The heatwave’s impact has been felt across key crops such as wheat, barley, maize, and oats, resulting in the smallest grain harvest for the European Union and the United Kingdom since 2018. The extreme temperatures have particularly affected maize during its pollination phase and wheat during grain development, leading to decreased yields in several major agricultural areas.

France is anticipated to experience the greatest losses, with a reduction of about 3.4 million tonnes in maize production. Hungary and Spain also face significant declines. Farmers across Europe report substantial damage, with some anticipating crop yields to plummet by as much as 50% to 70% due to the prolonged high temperatures and drought conditions.

In the United Kingdom, the situation is similarly dire, as extended dry spells in spring and early summer have impeded crop growth. This has forced farmers to commence harvesting earlier than usual while intensifying irrigation efforts to safeguard fruit, vegetable, and livestock production.

This reduced harvest is likely to increase Europe’s dependence on grain imports and may drive up global grain and food prices. Market analysts caution that additional weather-related disruptions in other significant agricultural regions, including drought-hit areas of the United States, could further constrain global food supplies.
