Trump halts Canada talks, citing ‘egregious’ reagan ad

Date:

President Trump has halted all trade talks with Canada, citing what he called an “egregious” ad from Ontario that featured Ronald Reagan .
“based on their egregious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated,” Trump wrote on truth social. He called the ad “fake” and “fraudulent.”
The ad used a 1987 clip of reagan warning against protectionism to protest the 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods. Ontario premier Doug Ford, who launched the ad, defended its cooperative message.
The ad has also been criticized by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They said the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the full speech, where Reagan was also justifying his own tariffs on japan.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, throws the c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship into chaos and complicates an upcoming review of the usmca.
