Erdoğan, Chancellor Merz Hold Talks on NATO, Ukraine Conflict, and Relations

On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan engaged in a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss pivotal issues concerning bilateral relations, NATO cooperation, and global security challenges. The dialogue underscored Türkiye’s ambition to bolster its relationship with Germany, with Erdoğan stressing the significance of expanding collaboration across political, economic, and security domains.

A major focus of their discussion was the upcoming NATO leaders’ summit slated to occur in Ankara. Erdoğan articulated Türkiye’s expectation that the summit would enhance Europe’s defense capabilities within the framework of NATO, while also upholding strong transatlantic unity. This summit is anticipated to be a critical platform for addressing defense strategies and cooperation among member states.

The leaders also turned their attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to facilitating a lasting peace and conveyed Ankara’s efforts to rekindle diplomatic negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Throughout the conflict, Türkiye has maintained diplomatic relations with both countries, positioning itself as a potential mediator in efforts to ease tensions and encourage dialogue.

During the call, Erdoğan and Merz exchanged perspectives on broader regional developments, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties and cooperation to address global security issues effectively.
